Jessica Yin ~ Pop Rock (with a dramatic flair)

Jessica Yin (known as Jess, by her friends) is a singer, songwriter, and musician based in Richmond, VA who combines her background in classical music with modern pop rock and jazz. Her music embraces a “no boundaries” approach to create a rich, confident sound. She explores a spectrum of themes in her songs and uses every instrument to capture different emotions, ranging from a wistful guitar in “Prophecy” to a melodramatic saxophone in “She Says”. She hopes to use music as a way to unite us in our shared experiences, whether that’s swaying to a gentle piano ballad about first love or grooving to a guitar and saxophone harmony about body image and confidence.

Biography

Jessica Yin is a singer, songwriter, and musician based in Richmond, VA whose music can be broadly described as indie pop rock. She was born and raised in Maryland, and music was a prominent part of her childhood and education. She began taking piano lessons at age 6 and shortly after starting learning violin. After school afternoons typically consisted of practicing both instruments and recitals. She was in the county orchestra and choir and began thinking of how to combine her training in classical music with her love for singing. At University of Maryland, she became very involved in musical theatre and discovered a new passion for songwriting and composing.

In 2023, Jessica moved to Richmond and started pursuing music as a solo artist. She performed at open mic nights and rapidly become involved in Richmond's collaborative music scene. She began playing piano and violin for the band Ryan Irby and Emerald City while continuing to perform her own original music at different venues in Virginia. Jessica’s favorite performance was Fiesta Asia in D.C., where she got to sing songs about navigating cultural identity while representing her pride in being a daughter of immigrants.

She is constantly writing new music and working with new musical collaborators. What started off as solo songs in her bedroom about identity and growth has turned into a full band, but her central message stays the same and is reflected in her music: there are no boundaries to who you can be. Currently, she is performing in and around Richmond and recording her first EP, which is expected to be released in Fall 2025.
